Nagayakshi Amma

Nagayakshi Amma, the consort of Nagaraja Swamy is regarded as his ‘Pattama Sri’. As the reigning Queen of the Yaksha Kula, she is revered as the Matriarch of the Nagas. Having the sobriquets ‘Banumathi Devi’ and ‘Nagamma’, she is popularly known as Nagayakshi Amma.

At Pulikkal, her idol embodiment is adorned with 5 Hooded Serpents, seated in Padmasana with her hands in Abhayavardham and supported by Boothas. Following her Prathishta, Aaradhana has been carried out ever since abiding by the command of our scriptures.

Having self-manifested (swayambhu) herself in the land of Pulikkal, Nagayakshi Amma is of profound importance here.



Nagaraja Swamy

Nagaraja Swamy is the son of Saptarishi Kashyapa and Kadru Mata thampathi. Being the avatar of Adi Shesha, he possesses both Shaiva aikyam and Vaishnava aikyam. He is consort to Nagayakshi Amma.

Sarpayakshi Amma

Sarpayakshi Amma is the second consort of Nagaraja Swamy. She is the Mother of all the Sarpas. She has the monikers ‘Shembakakshi’ and ‘Sarpa Rani’ as she is their sovereign. Since she governs and protects the Sarpas, she is held in high esteem and also called ‘Sarparakshi’.

Shankarodathamma

Goddess Shankarodathamma is worshipped at Pulikkal in her form of Bala Bhadrakali, a manifestation of Adi Parashakti. Her idol standing 8 feet tall, was consecrated in accordance to the Tantric ritualistic procedures such as the Rurujith Vidhanam (Samayachara vidhi uthama puja), rahasya pujas of the Shakteya Sampradaya and embodying the trigunas - Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. In each of her four hands, she is armed with a sword, a trishool, the head of demon Daruka and a goblet respectively. She is adorned with a crescent diadem.

Goddess Shankarodathamma is ensconced facing the North and at her foot, a Sumeru is installed. A Banalinga is dedicated to Lord Kalakandeshwara facing the West. Goddessess Mahalakshmi and Shoolini accompany Shankarodathamma in her sanctum.

At the entrance are the Sapta Matrikas (Seven Mother Goddesses) and encircling the shrine are Gambeera Chamundi, Bhuvaneshwari and Veera Varahi. Outlying the mulapanthal are entourages Veerabhadra, Kshethrapalakan, Kalabhairava, Ashtanagas, Markkandeya Shastha and Kukshi Ganapathy. Facing Shankarodathamma’s abode, perpendicular is the Agnisthamba.
